Our 8th-grade students came together on Friday to honor our veterans and their sacrifices. We had an insightful discussion about the true meaning of Veteran's Day, and it was heartwarming to see our young minds reflect on the importance of this day. To show their appreciation, they also got creative and made beautiful cards for our veterans, filled with heartfelt messages and gratitude. But that's not all - our students also wanted to share their support with the community, so they made a special sign to display in the school windows. It's a simple yet powerful gesture that serves as a reminder for everyone passing by.

The sixth grade students learned interesting facts about Veteran's Day by completing a Scavenger Hunt in small groups. They also made a 3-way agamograph collaboration poster to recognize Veterans’ Day. One view of the poster shows a soldier. Another shows dog tags, and the third shows a flag.

6th Grade Art students learned to use the pinch method to create ceramics and made pinch pot pumpkins. They demonstrated the ability to score and slip, as well as other methods when constructing with clay. These awesome 6th graders were also able to construct a clay tile that represents themselves as an extension activity. This is the beginning of a series of skills designed to get them prepared for the next level and ultimately high school. 8th grade students pose with the clay mugs they have created. The animal/creature themed mug is an accumulation of the skills learned in 6th-8th grade, and prepares them for more advanced courses in high school. Who doesn't like Art they can drink out of?!

This week some of our Middle School Student Council Members attended a leadership conference hosted by Ted Neitzke, CESA 6 CEO, in Oshkosh, WI. Students learned about recognizing strong qualities of leadership through reflecting on people they admire and learning more about what it means to work and inspire others. Our students now have the task of inspiring those around them to be "buffalos" and charge into any storm showing perseverance and grit.

8th Grade US History students in Mr. Writt's class, recently researched and built cubes to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of Native American tribes and culture. Twenty-six different Native American tribes from across the United States were selected, including several from Wisconsin. Students shared their cubes with their classmates in a gallery walk style presentation. These tribes played a pivotal role in American history and will pop up throughout our class this year.

7th grade parent Heather Handel surprised Mrs. Skelton’s Exploratory Spanish class with these beautiful cookies to commemorate Día de los Muertos, which is on November 1 and 2. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is an important tradition for many of our students of Latino heritage. Family members honor their deceased loved ones through vibrant festivities by creating ofrendas, or altars, to ensure they are never forgotten. ¡Gracias, Sra. Handel!

7th graders in Mrs. Writt's geography class are now learning about population, and what makes people move. This week, students learned that their newly acquired knowledge isn't just useful in school, but also if they experienced a "Zombie Apocalypse!" Students learned how to identify push and pull factors, then applied their skills in identifying reasons a Zombie might move to an area so they would travel to a safer location.

Students in Mrs. Ballard's and Ms. Oates' Earth Science Classes investigated the factors that affect mass movements (mudslides, avalanches, rockslides, and slumps). Groups designed their own experiments to test either the slope of the land, the composition of the rock, or the moisture content of the soil. Students graphed and analyzed their data and then shared their results with the rest of the class to generate conclusions about mass movements. Then the class described areas in Wisconsin and in the United States that might be susceptible to mass movements.

This week Cory Clark from UW- River Falls stopped by the Advanced Plant Science to discuss schooling options after high school. Our students heard about the many different majors offered at the university, hands-on opportunities in labs and on the school farms, student life, short course, and sport opportunities. Our students were able to ask specific questions to Cory to help them determine their next steps in education.
